Veoh Video Network: Online Videos / Internet Television

When you upload your video to Veoh, it can also automatically syndicate that video to YouTube, MySpace and Google Video. You can also charge for your videos on a pay-per-view basis, although at the time this is written, this is on a limited case-by-case basis. Videos can be any length, file size or resolution. The videos can also be embedded on your website. Supported file formats include WMV, QuickTime and DivX, and the video and audio encoding allowed include MPEG-4 video codec, H264 Advanced Video Coding (QuickTime 7), Sorenson Video 3 (QuickTime 5), H263 Video Codec, Windows Media Video 8 and 9, MPEG-1. You can organize your videos into channels. Unlike some of the other video hosts, this network uses a peer-to-peer transfer system to send your video to its viewers; that is, when your viewers watch the show using the Veoh player, the player also uses their bandwidth to transfer videos to others.

YouTube

Google's YouTube allows you to upload videos up to 100 MB in size and 10 minutes in duration. The video clip or movie that you upload will be resized to fit a 320x240 window. File formats accepted by YouTube include WMV, AVI, MOV, MPG, and files from "most" digital cameras, camcorders and cell phones. They are however converted and delivered as a Flash video. You are also allowed to embed your shows into your website; for example, the How to Add a Feedback Form to Your Website (Video Tutorial) page includes a training video hosted by YouTube.

Blip.tv

Unlike many other services Blip.tv does not impose a size limit on the files you upload to their video hosting service, although they recommend that you limit your files to 100 MB. They have an opt-in advertising model, which means that you can choose not to display advertisements on your video. However, if you do, you get 50% of the ad proceeds. Video files can be in any format, although they prefer Quicktime and WMV files. The files are presented in whatever format you upload it in. They also provide a Flash version of your video which their system automatically generates for you. The service also allows you to embed your videos in your website.

Viddler

Viddler allows hosting for video files of up to 500 MB. Files may be in the MOV, AVI, WMV, MPG, MPG2, MPEG2, MP4, 3GP, 3G2, ASF, FLV, DV, and QT formats. You can embed the video into your website, and even start the video at specific portions of the video file using their system of timed tags.

Revver

Revver allows you to upload video files of up to 100 MB. Your video must be at least 4 seconds long, and there is no upper limit in duration. They share 50% of the advertising revenue generated from your movie with you. File formats accepted include MOV, MPEG, MPG, MP4, WMV, ASF and AVI (including DivX AVIs). Your video will be delivered in either the Flash or Quicktime format. Each video is manually reviewed by a human reviewer before it is posted online. You may embed your video into your website.

JumpCut

[Update (20 April 2009): JumpCut will close on 15 June 2009 and has already stopped accepting uploads.] Yahoo's JumpCut provides video hosting for shows up to 100 MB in file size. I can't seem to find information on the maximum duration (if any) that they impose on your clip. The online video editor allows your videos to be remixed, clipped, have transitions, titles and effects added to it, etc. It supports the upload of following video formats: MPG, MPEG, MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, RM, and 3GP. For audio tracks, MP3, WAV, Ogg, and AIFF are supported.

Blogger provide you with both the hosting as well as the online interface that you can use to create and maintain your blogs. It is capable of publishing your blog to either their free online service, or, via FTP, to any web host you choose. You can choose to have posts created in their own pages, the number of posts appearing on the main page, whether or not to have archives, choose from a selection of templates or use your own, customize the template in any way you choose, create any number of blogs, generate a news feed, etc. You create and maintain your blog using their web interface. Their free blog hosting service provides a subdomain name like yourname.blogspot.com, and places advertisements on your blog.

WordPress.com - Free Blog

Unlike the situation where you install WordPress on your own web host, getting an account here gives you a fully working WordPress blog with little fuss. The blog comes with built-in statistics that tell you the number of visitors you have and the pages they visit, themes that you can choose from, spam protection, the ability to make regular pages as well as blog posts, the ability to export your blog posts and comments for backup, support for multiple authors, etc. There are some limitations however: you cannot place any advertisements on your web page, nor can you put any JavaScripts (including those supplied by free web statistics services), and the videos that you are allowed to post in your blog are limited to a select few video sharing sites that the host allows. You are also limited to 50 MB of uploads for your files.

You can post blogs as well as photos to this free blog host. Among the facilities provided is the ability to view statistics on your visitors, allow people to subscribe to be notified every time you post an entry, organisation of your blog into customisable topics, etc. It has limited customisation capabilities in terms of the appearance of your page.

You can post to this blog host either through its website using its online interface or through a desktop client software, which you can download. This is a free image host that allows you to upload your images, which, I think, you can hotlink from your website. The site does not seem to specify how large your files can be or how long they can be kept, but a user informs me that the files are limited to 32 MB and they are deleted after 3 days for a normal file or after 2 months if the file has a JPG or PNG extension.

FileFront

This free file host provides you with unlimited file uploads and downloads, unlimited bandwidth and unlimited space. Although I could not find the information on their site, there is a file size limit of 1 GB, and your file cannot take more than 10 hours to upload. You can give the public access to any of your files.

Sendmefile

You are allowed to upload files of up to 50 MB per file with this free file storage host. Your files are deleted after 14 days of inactivity.

MegaUpload

The maximum file size allowed for this free file storage host is 250 MB. Your file is deleted if no one downloads it for 30 days.

Turbo Upload

This file storage host allows you to upload files with a maximum size of 70 MB.

SaveFile

This file hosting site allows you to upload files up to 60 MB each. Inactive files are deleted after 14 days (or 10 days for what the site calls "extreme cases", whatever that means). Hotlinking is not allowed.

TransferBIGFiles

This free file storage host is designed primarily for people who want to send large files to their friends via email. Instead of sending the file by attachment and clogging up their mail box, you can use this host's interface to upload your file and send a message to your friend with the link to the file. Based on information from other users, there is apparently a limit of 1 GB to the file size, and your files are deleted after 5 days or 20 downloads

You are allowed to upload up to 100 MB of photos each month to this photo sharing service and have 3 sets of photos. Only your most recent 200 photos are displayed, although you can always link to your photo from your blog or website and continue to have that photo show up. Each photo can be up to 10 MB in size, and may be in the JPEG, non-animated GIF, PNG, TIFF (and possibly other) formats. They will be converted to the JPG format by the host. Your photos are compressed and resized to one of the following sizes: 75x75, 100 pixels (on the longest side), 240 pixels, 500 pixels, and 1024 pixels. It is also possible to make your photos private, so that they are only viewable by those you have given "Guest Passes". The service also provides a basic photo editing tool that you can use within your browser. (Or you can pop by the Free Image and Photo Editing Software page and get more fully-featured software.)

Picasa Web Albums

You can either use the free Google Picasa program (see the Free Image and Photo Editing Software page) to publish your photos to this service or do it directly from your web browser. You get 1 GB of space for your photos. Each photo can be no larger than 20 MB or 50 megapixels wide. If you use the Picasa program, you are also allowed to upload videos in one of the following formats: .avi, .asf, .mov (QuickTime), Windows Media, .mpg, .avi, .asf, .mov, .wmv, .mpg, .mpeg, and .mp4. The video must have a frame rate of more than 12 frames per second, bitrate of more than 260 Kbps, file size no larger than 100 MB and contain recognisable video content. Video codecs supported include H.264, H.263, MPEG 1/2/4 and motion JPEG. (Note that if you want to upload videos, you may get better features using one of the free video sharing and hosting services.)

This free photo sharing service allows you to share photos, graphics and video. Supported file types for images include gif, jpg, jpeg, png and bmp. Supported video types include g2, 3gp, 3gp2, 3gpp, 3p, asf, avi, divx, dv, dvx, flv, gif, moov, mov, mp4, mpeg4, mpg4, mpe, mpeg, mpg, qt, wmv, xvid, and rm. Images are limited to a maximum of 1 MB each or 1024x768 pixels in resolution each. Videos are limited to 5 minutes or less in play length and 100 MB in file size. (Note, if you are primarily uploading videos, you may get better features if you go for the free video sharing and hosting services.) The image/video host allows you to link to your photos from your blog or other pages. You can also create slideshows (with up to 30 images), video mashups, collages, strips and stamps. Other features include the ability to create, customize and share 3D avatars (which you can use in forums, etc) You can make your photo albums public or private, as well remix or edit your video from their web-based interface. The service provides 1 GB of space for your images and video clips, and up to 25 GB of monthly traffic. There are probably also other limitations; this list is not exhaustive. Note that if you do not log into your account from time to time (at least once every 90 days at the time I checked), it may get deleted. Like most free hosting services, they are ad-supported.

This ad-supported photo hosting service provides 50 MB of space for your photos, and 50 MB space for your email. You can create a public album as well as a private album (which is visible only to you). You may also create different password-protected public albums, each accessible to different users. AllCommerce ecommerce and fulfilment

AllCommerce is an ecommerce and fulfilment system that allows you to access inventory and order information. It supports MySQL, PostgreSQL and Oracle (ie, you need one of those databases). The script is released under the GNU General Public License. At the time this is written, the site says that a future version will handle purchase orders, pull forwards, picking, shipping, problem orders and customer service, but that was in 2001.

Yams (Yet Another Merchant System)

Yams is an e-commerce shopping cart system that uses a MySQL backend. Its features include a product search facility, related products display, persistant shopping cart, support for multiple product types, user registration system, session ids for tracking, support for multiple shipping addresses, revenue reports broken down by referrers, works as a CGI script or under mod_perl, inventory tracking, order management tools, calculation of shipping charges, etc. It requires you to have an Apache server, MySQL, Mail::Sendmail module, etc.

Commerce.cgi

commerce.cgi is a shopping cart system with a store manager that allows you to manage your inventory (add, delete, edit items in your shop inventory). You can customise your storefront in a wide variety of ways: you can control the headers and footers, associate options with certain products (for example if the visitor selects a T-shirt, you would want a way for them to select the T-shirt size), add images, add static links, etc. Your visitors can also search for a particular product.

Web Store

This is a configurable shopping cart that allows your customers to select items (and put them back if they change their mind), search according to some criteria, etc. It appears to be released under the GNU General Public License, and is thus open source

poMMo Project - Mass Mailing List Software

This mass mailing list software allows you to add a mailing list to your site. Among its features is the ability to mail subsets of your subscribers, useful if you have segments of your subscribers that have particular interests or if you differentiate between different subscribers in some way (eg, paid subscribers, etc). To support this facility, the script allows you to create subscriber groups. The Ultimate PHP Board is a PHP message board script that supports threaded discussions. I'm not sure what all the features are though. At the time I wrote this, the site had little information about the board's features.

phpBB Forum

This PHP based forum or BBS requires you to have MySQL, MS-SQL, PostgreSQL, or an Access/ODBC database server. It purports to be customizable, has a search utility (allowing your BBS visitors to be able to search the forum), private messaging system, unlimited forums and posts, multiple forum moderators, IP tracking on posts, an installation script, the ability to turn on/off HTML in posts, and so on.

Zorum Community Forum Software

This is another PHP based community forum (message board) software. It requires a MySQL database, the Apache web server, and PHP version 4. According to its website, your server must also be running on Linux. The software supports both threaded and linear views. Other features include different permission levels, user profiles, moderated forums, personalisation, etc. It may be used free of charge for non-commercial purposes, but you have to register, and you may not put advertisements, banners, affiliate links or "any kind of commercial activity" on the forum pages of the site.
