Audacity® is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems. Learn more about Audacity... Also check our Wiki and Forum for more information.

The latest release of Audacity is 1.3.7 (Beta). Because it is a work in progress and does not yet come with complete documentation or translations into foreign languages, it is recommended for more advanced users. See New Features in 1.3 for more information about the 1.3.x Beta series.

For all users, Audacity 1.2.6 is a stable release, complete and fully documented. You can have Audacity 1.2.6 and 1.3.7 installed on the same machine.

SourceForge.net Community Choice Awards

Audacity is competing for the "Best Project" and "Best Project for Multimedia" categories in the 2009 SourceForge.net Community Choice Awards. Please nominate us now for one or both categories and spread the word to others! Nominations close on May 29, 2009 at 4:00 PDT.

The projects with the highest number of nominations in each category will be selected for the final round of voting commencing June 22, 2009.

Audacity has been chosen as "Favorite Audio Tool" in Linux Journal's 2009 Readers' Choice Awards.

"Audacity compact", an English translation of Markus Priemer's German-language "Audacity kompakt" book, is now available.

The book aims to be a "getting started" introduction for new Audacity users, while serving as a reference tool and source of Audacity tips and tricks for all.

April 21, 2009: Audacity is mentoring two Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2009 students

Audacity has been approved to mentor two students for Google Summer of Code 2009! GSoC offers student developers $4,500 stipends to write code for various open source projects.

The two projects will combine bug fixing with work on developing new features.
