TestDisk is OpenSource software and is licensed under the terms of the GNU Public License (GPL).

TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

TestDisk has features for both novices and experts. For those who know little or nothing about data recovery techniques, TestDisk can be used to collect detailed information about a non-booting drive which can then be sent to a tech for further analysis. Those more familiar with such procedures should find TestDisk a handy tool in performing onsite recovery.

You need the Ultimate Boot CD if you want to:

Run floppy-based diagnostic tools from CDROM drives. More and more PCs are shipped without floppy drives these days, and it is such a royal pain when you need to run diagnostic tools on them.

Free yourself from the slow loading speed of the floppy drive. Even if you do have a floppy drive, it is still much much faster to run your diagnostic tools from the CDROM drive, rather than wait for the tool to load from the floppy drive.

Consolidate as many diagnostic tools as possible into one bootable CD. Wouldn't you like to avoid digging into the dusty box to look for the right floppy disk, but simply run them all from a single CD? Then the Ultimate Boot CD is for you!

Welcome to SystemRescueCd

Description: SystemRescueCd is a Linux system on a bootable CD-ROM for repairing your system and recovering your data after a crash. It aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the partitions of the hard disk. It contains a lot of system tools (parted, partimage, fstools, ...) and basic tools (editors, midnight commander, network tools). It is very easy to use: just boot the CDROM. The kernel supports most of the important file systems (ext2/ext3/ext4, reiserfs, reiser4, btrfs, xfs, jfs, vfat, ntfs, iso9660), as well as network filesystems (samba and nfs).

SystemRescueCd is available for blind people. Now, the linux speakup screen reader is working well, and the speakup keymap is installed. This feature was tested by Gregory Nowak. Please note that you need SystemRescueCd-1.1.0 or later, since the versions between 0.3.8 and 1.0.4 do not include speakup. We regret this inconvenience. Notes specific to using speakup in SystemRescueCD are available on the speakup info page.

It is possible to make customized versions of the CD. For example, you can add your own scripts, to make an automatic restoration of the system. It's also possible to burn a customized DVD, with SystemRescueCd and 4.2 GB for your data (backup for example). Read the manual for more details. There is a new manual chapter that explains How you can burn a DVD+RW from SystemRescueCd

You can use SystemRescueCd to backup data from an unbootable Windows computer, if you want to backup the data stored on a Windows computer that cannot boot any more.

It is very easy to install SystemRescueCd on an USB stick. That's very useful in case you can't boot from the CD drive. You just have to copy several files to the stick and run syslinux. The install process can be done from Linux or Windows. Follow instructions from the Manual for more details.

The GParted application is the GNOME partition editor for creating, reorganizing, and deleting disk partitions.

A disk device can be subdivided into one or more partitions. The GParted application enables you to change the partition organization on a disk device while preserving the contents of the partitions.

With GParted you can accomplish the following tasks:

As a gimmick, and because I cant draw icons, the windows versions of my programs feature a cat photo for the programs icon and linux versions feature dogs. Due to a database problem a few download files would show up as "corrupted" when you try to run them. I have corrected this and all downloads should be fine now. Thanks to the users who let me know the files affected!

I have finally recieved my code signing certificate and am begining the long job of signing the updated programs, creating installers for them and uploading!

I have just uploaded RawCopy 1.1 in both stand alone EXE and Installer packages. The new version of RawCopy is digitally signed, supports Windows Vista and 7 UAC and should remove some other bugs. Online documentation is now available for RawCopy aswell!

I will continue to upload programs today and over the next few days! As im sure many of you are waiting for it, Unstoppable Copiers update to Version 4 will be put online sometime in the next few days with MANY improvements and bug fixes. The installer version of this program will also help those of you who are less computer literate!

I have just finished uploading the new website! There will be many more changes in the coming days, with a large number of programs on the site being replaced with vastley improved versions. I have completed the work on most of these applications and they are awaiting my digital signing certificate to arrive so all the programs from now on will be digitally signed so you know they are true Roadkil.Net programs!

All the updates will include two versions of the programs, a stand alone program as currently available and also an installer version for those of you who arent sure how to use the programs. The newly updated applications will also support Windows User Access Control for Vista and Windows 7 to resolve some issues users were having with administrator access.

I have also started updating the support for all the applications which should be available soon.

Ive almost completed a MAJOR website revamp along with updates to virutally every program on the website. The new format website will allow you to download previous versions of apps, download installer or stand alone versions and also all the programs will be digitally signed so you know they havent been tampered with! Im hoping to have the new website running in its full glory by Sunday the 17th of May!

If you have any last minute bug reports for the apps please get them in now. Ive done a huge amount of testing on all operating systems back to 98 and up to Windows 7 on all the revised programs and would appreciate any last minute changes/bugs etc being reported ASAP!

Firstly i would like to appologies to all my users about how long it has been since my last product updates! Work has kept me very busy and finding the time has been very hard recently. I have added a new program to the product library - DTMF Keypad! This program allows you to simulate DTMF (telephone) tones through your computers sound card.

MAJOR updates for FTP Client and DataByte have also been added! The FTP client now allows you to correctly choose differnet local drives aswell as fixes bugs with tooltips not working on some windows versions. The databyte update fixes issues with files smaller than 16 bytes and an error in the source file browsing routine.

Great news! Ive finally made time to finish the updated version of Unstoppable Copier which is now available for download! Its a great improvement over the last version and now allows sorting of the file lists, batch processing and command line processing. You can also use "Open With" to have unstoppable copier open its batch files automatically and have a simple "point and click" backup solution for your files!

I have also put on updated version of Alarm clock (window positioning bugfix), DiskImage (Vista disk locking bugfix) and Databyte (Added Zero terminator option).

Proper Usage Techniques

A deleted file is essentially an area on disk designated as free and ready to accept data (such as contents of some other file). Luckily, unless the area has already been overwritten, it still holds the contents of the deleted file. Due to this fact it is possible to undelete files.

This fact also dictates the following procedure for using FreeUndelete:

Stop any activity on the disk you are going to undelete files from! Remember that writing to that disk can damage the contents of the deleted files. Examples of disastrous activity include: copying files to the disk, installing programs there or running programs that use the disk as their swap media.
Download and install FreeUndelete. Whenever possible, save the setup executable and install the program to a disk that does not hold files you need to undelete.
Run and use FreeUndelete.

Tip: It is common that the only drive user has is C: and this is also the drive from where files need to be undeleted. In that case a good solution is using a USB flash drive as FreeUndelete download and install destination.

NTFS Undelete is free and open source software that allows you to recover deleted files. It recovers files directly from hard drive, and it will work even if you empty Recycle Bin.

Before downloading NTFS Undelete, please consider the following:

When you delete a file, its content physically remains intact on the media, but the occupied space becomes marked as free. Next file saved to the disk may overwrite the contents of the deleted file.

It is very important to make sure that no application writes to the drive or partition where deleted file is located since every new file (even a small one) may overwrite the deleted file.

Tips. What you should do, when you realized that the file you need is deleted:

Do not open or close files and applications.
Many applications create temporary files which may overwrite and corrupt your deleted files.
Depending on your system configuration, you should perform one of the following actions:
1. If deleted files were located on the system disk (usually disk "C:"), or if you have only one logical disk in the system, you should not install any software into the system since it will most likely overwrite your deleted file.
  
  We provide an ISO image with NTFS Undelete. You will have to use another computer to burn that image to a CD or DVD. Then just run NTFS Undelete directly from CD.
2. If your deleted files are not located on the system disk, then you can use NTFS Undelete Windows Installer to install the software as usual.
Run NTFS Undelete application and locate deleted file you'd like to restore.
Always recover files to another disk or partition. Do not recover files to the same partition they were located, otherwise files you are recovering may get corrupted and unrecoverable.

What is DiskDigger?

DiskDigger can recover files from any type of media that your computer can read. This includes USB flash drives, memory cards (SD, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, etc), and of course your hard drive. The types of files that it recovers include photos, videos, music, documents, and many other formats.

DiskDigger can even scan reformatted or badly formatted disks (disks to which Windows can’t assign a drive letter), and even disks with bad sectors. It bypasses the Windows file system drivers and scans your disk directly. It has its own built-in support for the following file systems: FAT12 (floppy disks), FAT16 (older memory cards), FAT32 (newer memory cards and hard disks), NTFS (newer hard disks), and exFAT (Microsoft’s new successor to FAT32).

DiskDigger is also very compact and portable. The entire program is a single executable file that you can run from anywhere. There’s nothing to “install,” and the program doesn’t leave any trace of having been run.

You may find DiskDigger useful if…

you deleted one or more photos from a memory card by accident, and want them restored.
you deleted one or more photos from a memory card on purpose, but now want them restored.
you deleted some documents from your USB flash drive, and want to recover them.
you came across an old hard drive of yours (or someone else’s) that’s been reformatted, and would like to see what its previous contents were.
you’ve “securely wiped” your media, and want to make sure that your media has actually been wiped correctly.
you’re just curious about what old deleted files are still present on your memory cards or hard drives.

DiskDigger is also a work in progress. This means that new features will be added very frequently, including support for more file formats, more configuration options, etc., so check back for updates.

How does it work?

DiskDigger has two modes of operation which you can select when scanning your media for deleted files:

Scan the file system for deleted files (dig deep). This scans the file system that is present on your media, searching for deleted file entries. Supported file systems are FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS. The advantages of this are:
- Very fast
- Recovers all file types
- Recovers file names
And the disadvantages are:
- Doesn’t support all possible file systems (see above for supported file systems)
- Doesn’t scan entire disk (only scans what the file system is aware of)
Scan the disk surface for traces of lost files (dig deeper). This thoroughly scans every sector of your media, searching for traces of known file types. The advantages of this are:
- Scans entire disk
- Goes underneath the file system, therefore independent of file system
And the disadvantages are:
- Slower (sometimes much slower) than the first method
- Doesn’t recover file names or fragmented files
- Only supports certain file types
- Finds ‘existing’ files as well as deleted files

What isn’t DiskDigger?

It’s not magic. It can’t recover any arbitrary file from any amount of time in the past. When trying to recover lost files, you should be realistic. In a real-world situation, you’ll have a good chance of recovering your files only if they were deleted very recently. The more you keep using your disk to work with new files, the slimmer your chance of recovering deleted files. Of course it’s always worth a try.

It is not a “repair” utility. It cannot repair a broken memory card or disk. DiskDigger is a strictly “read-only” tool, and never changes the contents of the media you scan. It will, of course, scan unformatted (or badly formatted) media, but it won’t attempt to fix the formatting of the media.

Features:

DiskDigger scans for many different types of files, including photos, videos, music files, and documents, and displays what it finds as it scans in real time.
You can preview most of the files found by DiskDigger without having to save them to a different location first. More than that, you can preview files while DiskDigger continues scanning!
DiskDigger scans any type of media that is readable by your computer, including USB flash drives, memory cards (SD, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, etc), and your hard drive(s).
It can undelete files from all types of FAT partitions (including the new exFAT file system), as well as NTFS.
It can go underneath the file system to scan for traces and remnants of lost files.
DiskDigger does everything in memory, meaning that it never writes any temporary files to your disk or other media (unless you choose to save files that it recovers).
Since DiskDigger is a completely self-contained program, it leaves no trace on the computer where it is run. It does not save any settings to the registry. There is nothing to “install,” and the entire program is a single executable file.
For advanced users, DiskDigger allows scanning disk image files.

How to Use

Overview

Unison is a file-synchronization tool for Unix and Windows. It allows two replicas of a collection of files and directories to be stored on different hosts (or different disks on the same host), modified separately, and then brought up to date by propagating the changes in each replica to the other.

Unison shares a number of features with tools such as configuration management packages (CVS, PRCS, Subversion, BitKeeper, etc.), distributed filesystems (Coda, etc.), uni-directional mirroring utilities (rsync, etc.), and other synchronizers (Intellisync, Reconcile, etc). However, there are several points where it differs:

Unison runs on both Windows and many flavors of Unix (Solaris, Linux, OS X, etc.) systems. Moreover, Unison works across platforms, allowing you to synchronize a Windows laptop with a Unix server, for example.
Unlike simple mirroring or backup utilities, Unison can deal with updates to both replicas of a distributed directory structure. Updates that do not conflict are propagated automatically. Conflicting updates are detected and displayed.
Unlike a distributed filesystem, Unison is a user-level program: there is no need to modify the kernel or to have superuser privileges on either host.
Unison works between any pair of machines connected to the internet, communicating over either a direct socket link or tunneling over an encrypted ssh connection. It is careful with network bandwidth, and runs well over slow links such as PPP connections. Transfers of small updates to large files are optimized using a compression protocol similar to rsync.
Unison is resilient to failure. It is careful to leave the replicas and its own private structures in a sensible state at all times, even in case of abnormal termination or communication failures.
Unison has a clear and precise specification.

Freebyte Backup is a freeware backup program for Windows. It allows one to easily copy (and filter) a large number of files and directories from various sources into one backup directory. It is possible to backup all files found in the specified set of input directories, or to have only certain file types copied. Files can be filtered according to file-extensions. E.g. you can specify that you want to backup all .doc, .rtf, .jpg, .bmp files, but none of the .exe, .dll and .txt files. You can also very easily define new file extensions inside the filter.

Incremental backup options
With the optional 'Incremental backup' feature, the program only copies files which have not yet been saved by Freebyte Backup.
It is also possible to specify a date, so that only files changes/created after a certain date/time are copied, or to only copy files if they are more recent than the corresponding files at the target location.

Scheduling backups
Using the Freebyte backup command-line parameters in combination with the Freebyte Task Scheduler program, you can automate and schedule your backups.

Detailed Report
The report screen shows a list of all the files which are part of the backup process. Of each file, one can see if the 'backup status' is 'copied', 'skipped' or 'failed'. One can also see the file size, the file date, the source and target locations, the total number of files copied, and the total number of bytes copied.
The file list in the report report screen can be sorted according to file status ('copied', 'skipped' or 'failed'), file name, file date, target location, etc.

Profiles
You don't have to use profiles with FB Backup, but it can make life easier when you are working with several sets of data which need to be backed up at different times.
A profile within FB Backup consists of all the backup input directories specified, the backup output directory, and the filter settings. Profiles can be created, loaded from file, saved to file.

Installation
Installation is extremely simple! You can choose to run the installler which sets up the program. Alternatively, you can install the program manually, by copying the program files into a directory of your choice.

Introduction

BackupPC is a high-performance, enterprise-grade system for backing up Linux and WinXX PCs and laptops to a server's disk. BackupPC is highly configurable and easy to install and maintain.

Given the ever decreasing cost of disks and raid systems, it is now practical and cost effective to backup a large number of machines onto a server's local disk or network storage. This is what BackupPC does. For some sites, this might be the complete backup solution. For other sites, additional permanent archives could be created by periodically backing up the server to tape. A variety of Open Source systems are available for doing backup to tape.

BackupPC is written in Perl and extracts backup data via SMB using Samba, tar over ssh/rsh/nfs, or rsync. It is robust, reliable, well documented and freely available as Open Source on SourceForge.

BackupPC Features [ Top ]

A clever pooling scheme minimizes disk storage and disk I/O. Identical files across multiple backups of the same or different PCs are stored only once resulting in substantial savings in disk storage and disk I/O.
One example of disk use: 95 latops with each full backup averaging 3.6GB each, and each incremental averaging about 0.3GB. Storing three weekly full backups and six incremental backups per laptop is around 1200GB of raw data, but because of pooling and compression only 150GB is needed.
Optional compression support further reducing disk storage. Since only new files (not already pooled) need to be compressed, there is only a modest impact on CPU time.
No client-side software is needed. The standard smb protocol is used to extract backup data on WinXX clients. On linux clients, tar over ssh/rsh/nfs is used to backup the data. With version 2.0.0, rsync is also supported on any client that has rsync or rysncd.
A powerful web (http/cgi) user interface allows administrators to view log files, configuration, current status and allows users to initiate and cancel backups and browse and restore files from backups.
A full set of restore options is supported, including direct restore (via smbclient, tar, or rsync/rsyncd) or downloading a zip or tar file.
Supports mobile environments where laptops are only intermittently connected to the network and have dynamic IP addresses (DHCP).
Flexible configuration parameters allow multiple backups to be performed in parallel, specification of which shares to backup, which directories to backup or not backup, various schedules for full and incremental backups, schedules for email reminders to users and so on. Configuration parameters can be set system-wide or also on a per-PC basis.
Users are sent periodic email reminders if their PC has not recently been backed up. Email content, timing and policies are configurable.

Run floppy-based diagnostic tools from CDROM drives. More and more PCs are shipped without floppy drives these days, and it is such a royal pain when you need to run diagnostic tools on them.

Free yourself from the slow loading speed of the floppy drive. Even if you do have a floppy drive, it is still much much faster to run your diagnostic tools from the CDROM drive, rather than wait for the tool to load from the floppy drive.

Description: Partimage is a Linux utility which saves partitions having a supported filesystem to an image file. Most Linux and Windows filesystems are supported. The image file can be compressed with the gzip / bzip2 programs to save disk space, and they can be splitted into multiple files to be copied on CDs / DVDs, ... Partitions can also be saved across the network since version 0.6.0 using the partimage network support, or using Samba / NFS. If you don't want to install Partimage, you can download and burn SystemRescueCd. It's a livecd that allows to use Partimage immediately even if your computer has no operating system installed (useful to restore an image), and it allows to save an image on a DVD on the fly.

Partimage will only copy data from the used portions of the partition. For speed and efficiency, free blocks are not written to the image file. This is unlike the 'dd' command, which also copies empty blocks. Partimage also works for large, very full partitions. For example, a full 1 GB partition can be compressed with gzip down to 400MB.

This is very useful to save partitions to an image in some cases:

First you can restore your linux partition if there is a problem (virus, file system errors, manipulation error). When you have a problem, you just have to restore the partition, and after 10 minutes, you have the original partition. You can write the image to a CD-R if you don't want the image to use hard-disk space.
This utility can be used to install many identical computers. For example, if you buy 50 PCs, with the same hardware, and you want to install the same linux systems on all 50 PCs, you will save a lot of time. Indeed, you just have to install on the first PC and create an image from it. For the 49 others, you can use the image file and Partition Image's restore function.

Warning: Partimage does not support ext4 and btrfs filesystems. If you need an ext4 / btrfs support or if you need modern features (checksumming, multi-thread compression, encryption, flexibility in the size) you should try FSArchiver.

With this program you could save all data on a partition to a file (such as you could save this file on a CD for example). Then if something goes wrong, you can completely restore the partition from the backup file. You no longer have to reinstall every piece of software from scratch. All you have to do is restore the partition from the backup file and then update any software that was modified since the backup was created.

Note: beware of software which installs or modifies files on multiple partitions (e.g. Windows programs which update the registry or DLLs that may be on other partitions). If one partition is saved or restored, you must include others (otherwise, inconsistencies could prevent software from running).

Partition Saving is able to compress data (using the gzip compression algorithm) and split it up into several files (e.g. if you need to save a 2 Gb partition onto a CD, this can be done by compressing it and, if necessary, splitting it up into 650 Mb files). Most partition types are supported. In the case of FAT (12, 16 and 32), ext2/3 and NTFS partitions, you can choose between saving all sectors or in-use sectors only.

Server-part often runs (only) under DOS/Windows. I wanted to use a Unix based server.
Supported filesystems include everything from Microsoft, but others are not handled properly (Solaris/x86, NetBSD, ...)
I don't want to deal (ever again) with making a DOS-based bootfloppy, that gets its IP-number via DHCP.
I've played with doing multicast-based deployment based on imm, but the result was so slow I decided not to pursue it.

4. Using it

4.1 Preparations

Using the g4u floppy images:
1. Download the floppy images, g4u-2.3-1.fs g4u-2.3-2.fs and g4u-2.3-3.fs or g4u-2.3.fs.zip, which contains these files.
2. If you downloaded the g4u-2.3.fs.zip file, unpack it to get g4u-2.3-1.fs, g4u-2.3-2.fs and g4u-2.3-2.fs
3. Write the two images to two seperate floppy disk. Under Unix, a simple "cat g4u-2.3-1.fs >/dev/diskette" (and same for -2.fs) will do. Make yourself familiar with the name of your floppy device, some common ones are:
  - NetBSD: /dev/fd0a
  - Solaris: /dev/diskette
  - Linux: /dev/fd0
  There are also similar devices for USB sticks, but you need to grab the g4u.fs from the ISO to put there:
  - NetBSD: /dev/sd0d
  - Linux: /dev/sd0
  If you're using Microsoft Windows or DOS, use rawrite.exe. There's also a Windows-based program available called rawr32.zip.
Using the g4u CDROM ISO image:
1. Download the CDROM ISO image, g4u-2.3.iso or g4u-2.3.iso.zip
2. If you downloaded the g4u-2.3.iso.zip file, unpack it to get g4u-2.3.iso
3. Please consult your CDROM writing software (Nero, DiskJuggler, WinOnCD, cdrecord, ...) 's manual on how to write the g4u.iso file to a CDROM. Note that the image is bootable.
On a FTP server of your choice, create an user-account called "install", and protect it with some password. Make sure the 'install' user can login via ftp (/etc/shells...)
If you want to use a different account, you can specify "login@server" for slurpdisk, uploaddisk etc..
Make sure you have a working DHCP server that hands out IP addresses and other data needed to access the FTP server from your workstation (name server, netmask, default gateway). Else you will have to set the IP-number manually..

4.2 Image creation

Boot the CD or floppy on the machine you want to clone. See it read the kernel from disk, then print out all the devices found in the machine. It will do DHCP next, asking for an IP number - be sure you have DHCP configured properly! At the end you'll get a text description of possible commands, and a shell prompt.
Whole harddisk:
Type "uploaddisk your.ftp.server.com filename.gz" to read out the machine's harddisk (rwd0d), and put it into the "install" account of your FTP server under the given filename. The disk image is compressed (with gzip -9), so maybe use a ".gz" file suffix. You don't have to, though. Before putting the file on the FTP server, the "install" account's password is requested.
If you want to clone your second IDE disk, add it's name on the uploaddisk command line: "uploaddisk your.ftp.server.com filename.gz wd1". Similarly, if you use SCSI instead of IDE disks, use "uploaddisk your.ftp.server.com filename.gz sd0".
If you want to use a different account name than "install", use "account@your.ftp.server.com" for both uploaddisk and slurpdisk.
One partition only:
Get an overview of disks recognized by g4u by typing "disks", a list of partitions on a certain disk is available via "parts disk", where disk is one of the disks printed by "parts", e.g. wd0, wd1, sd0, etc. Partitions are numbered with letters starting from 'a', where partitions a-d are usually predefined, with your partitions starting at 'e'. Partitions here are BSD-partitions, which have little in common with DOS MBR partitions. To specify a partition, use something like "wd0e" or "sd0f": "uploadpart your.ftp.server.com filename.gz wd0e". Run "uploadpart" without arguments for more examples.
Wait until you're back at the shell prompt (ignore the errors :-). Depending on your network, CPU, harddisk hardware and contents, image creation can take several hours!
You can switch off the machine now. Type "halt" or simply press reset/power button - there are no filesystems mounted so no harm will result.
Check that your FTP server's "install" account now has the image file.

4.3 Image deployment

Boot the CD or floppy to the shell prompt again, see above.
Whole harddisk:
Type "slurpdisk your.ftp.server.com filename.gz". This will log into the FTP server's "install" account, verify the password, then retrieve the image, uncompress it and write it back to /dev/rwd0d.
If you want to restore to a SCSI disk, add the disk's name to the slurpdisk command line, e.g. "slurpdisk your.ftp.server.com filename.gz sd0".
See above if you want to use an account name other than "install".
One partition:
Use "slurppart your.ftp.server.com filename.gz wd0e" or whatever values you passed to uploadpart. Please note that the partition information is taken from your MBR, which is expected to be the same as before image creation - expect surprises if you change something between image creation and deployment. In case of inevitable changes, check the start sector and size values given by "parts". For an image that includes the MBR, do a full backup with "uploaddisk".
Reboot the machine (type "reboot" or press reset button), and see if your machine comes up as expected - it should!

4.4 Copying a disk locally

Be aware that the partitions to copy should have identical size (down to the sector), else funny things will happen. When copying a 'big' partition into a 'small' one, g4u won't thrash the data behind the 'small' partition, but of course the copy is not complete either. Take special note that that case could happen when you restore a copy made that way, and which went fine when you first copied your small working partition to your big backup partition!

5. FAQs and hints on disk cloning

5.1 Supported filesystems

One of the questions arising a lot is "what filesystems does g4u support". The answer is: "all of them". g4u reads the disk bit by bit, starting from byte #0 to the end. It includes any MBR, boot record, partition table and the partitions themselves without further investigating the structure of the data stored in these partitions.

5.2 Supported Operating Systems

By moving the harddisks to a PC, g4u can even be used to deploy operating systems for non-PC based SCSI machines running HP-UX, Irix, Solaris, AIX etc.

5.3 Supported Hardware

If you're unsure if your hardware is supported, simply boot g4u and see if your network card gets listed by "ifconfig -a" and if your disks get listed by the "disks" command. If not, adding relevant parts of "dmesg" output (from g4u; press space bar to scroll down) is required for analysis if you ask for help. See "Reporting problems" for more information.

5.4 A word on disk sizes

If you cannot avoid preparing an image on a big disk that'll get deployed to a small disk later, make sure the "extra" space is not occupied by a active partition or filesystem, else data loss is very likely to occur!

If you intend to deploy a "small" image to a "big" disk, the extra space that's not covered by g4u can be used for creating a partition and a filesystem. You will have to do that on your own, e.g. using your operating systems' post installation steps.

5.7 Problems with images at 2GB

So far, whatever FTP server comes with NetBSD, Solaris and Windows 2000 has been used without problems.

5.9 Problems with network performance

5.10 Reducing the image size

But there is an easy way to circumvent the problem: use the native operating system's understanding (and implementation) of the filesystem, and make sure it prepares empty/unused blocks in a way so they don't contain random garbage data but values which can be compressed easily by g4u, thus resulting in small image sizes.

Effectively, you just fill up the disk's unused blocks with zero-bytes. Open file for writing, stuff in 0-bytes until the disk is full, then close the file and remove it. The result is that all unused blocks were used by the file, and filled with data that g4u can then compress easily. Usually the operating system will just mark the blocks as unused, without changing the actual data content.

Using this technique on a 20GB disk that had 6GB Solaris 8/x86 and the rest Windows 2000 Workstation shrunk the image from ~6GB compressed to ~2GB compressed. You can probably imagine the effect of this on deployment time too. :)

To perform the filling of unused data blocks with zero-bytes, there are several ways, depending on what operating system you use on your computer, and what software you have available:

Standard Unix:

This works on any Unix variant - Linux, NetBSD, Solaris, etc.:

This freeware program can erase your disk in a safe way, but it can also be told to just write a pattern of all-0-bits to the disk. Grab it at www.heidi.ie/eraser. Thanks to Stephen Krans [s040 at krans dot org] for the hint!

Windows "onboard" solution:

Aparently Windows XP comes with a tool to do some harddisk encryption that can also be used to write 0-bytes to the disk. To do so, run the following command: cipher /W:C: for drive C:. You will need to abort (Control+C) after the first round, else it will write random data after filling the disk nicely with 0-bytes.

Windows "sdelete":

Microsoft provides a tool "sdelete" that offers a switch -c in recent versions (only!) to zero free space on drives.

5.11 Setting IP-number manually

Find out if your network device is recognized, and by what name, using the command

Your network device is something like "ex0", "tlp0", etc. (Note that unlike in Linux, NetBSD doesn't call all ethernet cards "eth0"!)
Next configure the network device's IP number and netmask. It is assumed that your network device is xx0 here, and that the machine should run with IP number 1.2.3.4 and netmask 255.255.255.0:

Project purpose and components:

This is a collection of utilities and libraries intended for forensic or forensic-related investigative use in a modern Microsoft Windows environment. The components in this collection are intended to permit the investigator to sterilize media for forensic duplication, discover where logical volume information is located and to collect the evidence from a running computer system while at the same time ensuring data integrity (e.g. with a cryptographic checksums) and while minimizing distortive alterations to the subject system. The components of this package are not intended to preclude all changes to the subject system while the evidence collection process is under way . A third party hardware or software write blocker should be employed in those circumstances where it is deemed necessary to guarantee that no changes occur to the subject volume prior to and after the imaging process.

· Volume_dump displays storage device properties such as the manufacturer, vendor ID and serial number, among other information. Certain USB storage devices may return uninitialized data for the serial number which may include control characters and other values that do not print or display properly. This error condition is handled in versions of Microsoft Windows™ prior to Windows™ Vista. But Vista passes the uninitialized data up to the application. Build 2374 handles this error condition.

May 14, 2008:

FAU-1.3.0.2364(beta1) released for evaluation and testing. This build addresses three problems:
Using the ‘--comp lznt1’ option with DD dramatically improves throughput when transmitting evidence over the wire. A Netcat listener then may be configured using the `--decomp lznt1’ option to decompress the evidence before it is written to a storage medium. See Specific Remarks #5, below. The currently released build of DD does not compress the log or cryptographic checksum files, however; and the Netcat listener assumes that all files will be transmitted using the same encoding. The result is that the log and checksum files are not successfully transmitted.
A workaround for the first problem is to specify a separate Netcat listener omitting the `--decomp’ option to receive the log and checksum output from DD. This was in fact the practice prior to the current release of the FAU which includes a version of Netcat that is able to accept multiple simultaneous connections. The `--lport’ and `--tport’ options may be used with DD to specify alternate destination ports for log and checksum output. Unfortunately, description of the `--tport’ option was omitted from the help text displayed by the current release of DD.
DD may be used to clone a hard drive or logical volume, either by writing output directly to the destination drive or volume, or by acquiring to an intermediate image file which then is written to the destination. The `--verify’ option may be used with DD to control whether the input was correctly written to the destination. Sometimes you need to restore data to a larger drive or volume than the source. But the current release of DD assumes that the destination drive or volume will be the same size as the source, in which case verification erroneously will fail. Build 2364 limits verification to the portion of the destination drive or volume that matches the size of the source drive, volume or image file.
This fix required non-trivial changes to the lznt1 compression code. Please do not use this new build in a production setting until it has been thoroughly tested.

November 30, 2007:

FAU released.
Build 2362 fixes a bug in the DD `seek’ and `--seek’ options that was discovered subsequent to the release of build 2362. This bug also affected the function of the DD `notrunc’ and `-a’ options. Thanks to Liang Chen for reporting this problem.

What’s included in this release:

Included in this release are x86 and x64 versions of the following modules:

1. Dd.exe: A completely new implementation inspired by the popular GNU dd utility program.

2. Volume_dump.exe: An original utility to dump volume information and drive information and USN journals.

3. FMData.exe: An original utility to collect files system metadata, to produce and verify security catalogs (cryptographic hash sets) using one or more cryptographic hash algorithms and to verify system binaries using the system file checker (SFC) API.

4. Wipe.exe: An original utility to sterilize media prior to forensic duplication.

5. Nc.exe: A completely new implementation of the popular Netcat utility inspired by the original version created by Hobbit.

6. Zlib.dll: The latest version of Jean-loup Gailly and Mark Adler’s Zlib (currently version 1.2.3).

7. Bzip2.dll: The latest version of J. Seward’s bzip2 library (currently 1.0.4).

8. Boost_regex-vc80-mt-1_34_1.dll: Boost’s regular expression library.

9. Fauerror_xxx.dll: A series of dynamic link libraries (dll’s) that contain the localized language strings for FAU output. There is one dll for each locale supported by the FAU.

This software requires Microsoft Windows 5.0 (Windows 2000) or later. Versions of Microsoft Windows prior to Windows 2000 will not be supported. The software has been tested on Microsoft Windows 2000 Gold and SP1-SP4, Microsoft Windows XP with SP2 and SP3, Windows XP Home SP2, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Gold and SP1 and SP2, and both x86 and x64 versions of Microsoft Windows Vista with SP1 and Microsoft Windows Server 2008.

Program Binaries:

This release is distributed only in binary form and includes both Intel x86 and AMD x64 binaries. FAU binaries may be downloaded from here. A detached PGP signature of the compressed zipped binaries is available from here. Decompress the ZIP archive into a folder. Download the PGP detached signature and verify the ZIP archive. The decompressed binaries then may be burned onto a CDROM disk or other removable media. To run the accompanying executables, open a command prompt and navigate to the FAU installation folder. Type the appropriate command and press enter.

Microsoft Windows XP™ and later Microsoft operating systems support loading multiple versions of dynamic link libraries (dlls) as side-by-side assemblies. See generally, http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/sbscs/setup/supported_microsoft_side_by_side_assemblies.asp. Microsoft Windows Vista™ adds a trustInfo section to application manifests. The Vista™ trustInfo section provides the operating system with information on the privilege level required by the application. If the application requires administrative privileges, Windows Vista™ will display a user access control (UAC) dialog when the user attempts to run the application; otherwise the application will start with limited credentials. The FAU binaries include pre-Vista application manifests (without a trust info section) which are linked with the executable file. This means that Microsoft Windows will NOT automatically prompt for elevation (UAC) when FAU executables are run on Microsoft Windows™ Vista or later. In actual use scenarios the FAU executables sometimes need to be run as an administrator (e.g. when “live” imaging a hard drive) and sometimes not (e.g. when acquiring an encrypted file that is owned by a non-administrator). If you need to run the FAU as an administrator on Microsoft Windows™ Vista or later then you MUST first manually elevate a command prompt before attempting to run the FAU-executables.

The FAU is a fully localized application with initial support for American English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese (PRC). Remarks:

Over the past several years differing visions of computer or digital forensics have evolved [1]. On the one hand, there are those who view computer forensics as applying narrowly to the analysis of evidence acquired through “proper evidence handling procedures.” The term “proper” is reserved for the acquisition of evidence by forensic duplication (“imaging”) and the term “evidence” generally refers to file system evidence. Often the principle that evidence must be acquired without changing it is stated in absolute terms as a sort of digital “Prime Directive” of computer forensic discovery [2]. (For a more nuanced statement of this principle, compare [3].) Authors debate whether to shut the system down using the normal system shutdown commands (Robert E. Greenfield, 2002, 74) or by abruptly terminating its power (“pulling the plug”). (Kruze and Heiser, 2002, 5.) But shutting the system down is commonly accepted as the necessary predicate of forensic discovery.

During the same time period, a different vision of computer forensic discovery has emerged, in large measure due to the pioneering work of Dan Farmer and Wietse Venema [4]. This perspective regards the “Prime Directive” as more as an obstacle to digital forensic discovery than as its founding principle (at least as applied to the investigation of malicious within the incident response context).

Since 1999, we have come to remove the phrase “in a manner as free from distortion or bias as possible” from our definition of forensic computing. We believe that by risking digital evidence, investigators are more likely to retrieve additional data and have a better chance of addressing and understanding the problem at hand. (Farmer and Venema, 2005, 194.)

The reason for this rather sharp rejection of classical digital forensic paradigm is because the traditional belief system forces us to discard a good deal of evidence that that cannot be acquired within the traditional framework. By selectively including some evidence and discarding other evidence the classical approach itself alters evidence and thereby risks introducing the very thing which it seeks to avoid, bias and uncertainty. For Farmer and Venema it is better to “risk evidence” by observing a “live” computer system over time than to cling to the illusory “certainty” afforded by analysis of a computer system’s fossilized remains.

A year ago one might well have ascribed the former view of digital forensics to law enforcement and the latter view to security professionals and military intelligence [1]. Today this stereotype appears to be fading. Classical formulations which seemed an absolute bar to “live response” are being reinterpreted to allow what once seemed forbidden [12]. We are witnessing a convergence of interest on the part of law enforcement, security professionals and military intelligence in what is variously may be described as “live forensics,” “network forensics” or “remote forensics.”

The reasons for this convergence are varied but ultimately rooted in the nature of modern computing systems and computer crime. First there is the ubiquitous nature of malicious code, especially virus-delivered malware, within the modern computing environment [7]. This presence raises questions about the provenance of non-volatile computing artifacts that are difficult to answer within the traditional framework [8].

Advances in cryptography also present vexing problems for contemporary investigations. Encrypted documents have been shown to persist as plain text in volatile memory for some time after the document is committed to disk [6]. If a user currently is logged on to the suspect computer when the investigator arrives on the scene and that user has the right to access encrypted files, an investigator may be able to decrypt the documents without obtaining the user’s password or encryption keys. This opportunity will be lost once the suspect system is shut down.

Then there is the distributed nature of modern computing and computer crime. Also, an investigation may span literally thousands of machines and several continents. Implementing a classical computer forensic methodology would be extremely burdensome and time consuming in many modern investigative contexts.

Finally, there is the fact that crime or other inappropriate activity often targets the most valuable resources. The owner’s of mission critical servers or servers doing millions of dollars in transactions per day may be reluctant to shut their systems down without proof of a compromise (or other compelling reason). These same owners may be unwilling to shut their systems down at all if their systems are only incidentally affected by the matter under investigation, for example if an email is suspected to have been transmitted through one of their servers. Investigators need a way to rapidly identify and acquire items of evidentiary interest while minimizing interruptions to service and potential distortion or other risks to evidentiary integrity.

To the extent that digital forensics aspires to science it needs to come to grips with the notion of uncertainty since this notion pervades the process of scientific discovery from beginning to end. If we deny the operation of this principle we cease to be objective and become advocates of a particular party or point of view.

Scientists and jurists have to abandon the idea of absolute certainty in order to approach the identification process in a fully objective manner. If it can be accepted that nothing is absolutely certain then it becomes logical to determine the degree of confidence that may be assigned to a particular belief. (Aitken and Taroni, 2004, 5, citing Kirk and Kingston, 1964.)

If evidence were inherently reliable then there would be no need for forensics. Trust is not the starting point of a forensic investigation but its goal. Forensics sifts the facts in order to determine the confidence level which may be assigned to a particular belief. To this extent, forensics is the art of drawing trusted inferences from one or more un-trusted sources by the methodic application of reason to the evidence.

It is the application of a method based upon reason and observation that distinguishes forensics from the naive approach to evidence. Yet this same method may itself be the source of bias and error. The investigator’s training and method instill in him certain preconceptions concerning the nature and scope of a case, of what evidence is relevant and how it should be collected. These assumptions select and shape the evidence and thereby shape the results, for better or for worse.

The conventional approach sifts the facts by discarding volatile evidence from the outset. Volatile evidence is faulted because it cannot be collected without alteration (given the current state of technology). Yet the assumption that volatile evidence collection methods make volatile evidence inherently more unreliable than non-volatile evidence collection is just that, an assumption. Classical evidence collection procedures also modify evidence, and in some cases extremely pertinent evidence, namely by discarding it. To say that discarding 500+ MiB of memory does not alter evidence is to use words in a manner that is contrary to their ordinary meaning.

If it be accepted that all digital evidence collection methods result in at least some degree of alteration to the evidence (considered as a whole), then it seems possible to ask which evidence alterations will lead to the minimum distortion of the facts as applied to an individual case. It is after all not evidence alteration per se but strong misleading evidence which renders evidence unreliable. Maybe the classical approach will lead to the minimal misleading evidence in some cases. But in the light of the broad diffusion of anti-forensic techniques [13], the classical approach clearly is not always the best way to go.

Discarding volatile evidence is only one possible way of sifting the facts. Another way is by fusing evidence obtained from multiple sources (e.g. hard drive, memory, network, external records). We believe that evidence fusion offers a clear advantage in a number of contemporary contexts, such as the investigation of malicious code and related economic crimes. In other cases where the relevant facts are primarily historical in nature and likely saved to persistent storage the classical approach may be a better option.

The Forensic Acquisition Utilities does not attempt to resolve the problematic of forensic methodology. Rather, it assumes that both the classical and “live” approaches are valid in their proper application. Unlike in the sphere of religion, a scientist is permitted to subscribe to multiple belief systems while applying each one according to its heuristic value within the context of an individual case. It is for the investigator to weigh the probabilities and determine which method is more probable to arrive at a result which corresponds to the facts [†]. It is hoped that the tools accompanying this release will be found useful in either context.

Specific Remarks:

DD, Netcat, FMData and Volume_dump require the ‘--localwrt’ option to write to a local fixed drive.
The version of Netcat included in this release is able to support up to 10 simultaneous connections. Use the ‘-L’ option (with a capital ‘L’) to listen for multiple connections.
Always use the ‘-s’ option with the IP address of a local interface to listen with Netcat for inbound connections. The default is to listen over the loopback interface.
The ‘--iport’ option is used consistently to specify a destination TCP port number for output. If the ‘--iport’ option is specified, the destination address (‘-o’ option or ‘of’ option with DD) is interpreted as an IP address.
DD and netcat support the following compression algorithms: "zlib", "zlib+", "gzip", " gzip+", "bzip", "bzip+", "lznt1" and "lznt1+". The "lznt1" algorithm is the most efficient and dramatically improves network throughput. For example:

dd.exe -v if=\\.\F: of=192.168.0.1 conv=noerror --iport 3000 --comp lznt1 --log --cryptsum md5 --cryptsum sha1

nc -v -n -L -p 3000 -s 192.168.0.2 --decomp lznt1 -O h:\servername\filename.img –localwrt

Note that the log and cryptographic checksum files also will be transmitted over separate sockets to the same destination TCP port (3000 in the example above).

DD supports the use of wildcards (‘*’, ‘?’) as part of the input path. Use the ‘-r’ option with wildcards to recursively search (and copy) a directory and its subdirectories for files based upon a search pattern. Add “–A E” to select only EFS-encrypted files.
The default block size for DD is 1 MiB. The handling of “bad blocks” (“conv=noerror”) is new. Traditional versions of DD skip “bad blocks” in increments equal to the block size. If the block size is larger than the sector size of the device, data will be lost. The alternative is to set the block size equal to the device sector size. But that is usually quite slow. The new version of DD uses the specified block size until a “bad sector” is encountered, at which point the block size drops back to a value equal to the device sector size. The larger blocks size is resumed once the “bad block” is passed, until the next “bad block” is encountered.
If you are imaging a static drive (not "live" imaging), please add the ‘—verify’ option so that we test whether the output matches the input.
Use the ‘--chunk’ option with DD to segment output. For example the following command will image a logical volume in 2 GiB segments:

dd.exe -v if=\\.\F: of=h:\filename.img conv=noerror --chunk 2GiB --log --cryptsum md5 --cryptsum sha1 –localwrt

The output from this command will include a contents file (“*.contents.xml”). Use the ‘-g’ option together with the contents file as input to reassemble the “chunks” into a single image.

dd.exe -v -g if= filename.contents.xml of=fdrive.img --log --cryptsum md5 --cryptsum sha1 –localwrt

The null output device may be used with DD to generate cryptographic hashes of a file or device:

dd.exe -v if=fdrive.img of=NUL --cryptsum md5 --cryptsum sha1

The versions of DD distributed with this release does not support the \\.\PhysicalMemory pseudo-device as input.
The \\.\Zero pseudo-device may be used with DD as input to write zeroed blocks to the output file or device. Addition of the “--sparse” option makes the zeroed output file sparse.
Volume_dump and DD log output includes the “native size” for drives attached through the ATA bus. This is the value returned by the drive in response to the ATA READ NATIVE MAX ADDRESS/EXT commands. The commands are sent to the drive via ATA pass throughs. The implementation of ATA pass throughs is broken on versions of Microsoft Windows™ prior to Windows™ Vista, Windows XP with SP3 and Windows™ Server 2003 with SP2, however, in that “broken” versions of Microsoft Windows™ fail to pass the contents of the HOB-1 register up to the application layer. As a consequence, the “native size” will be truncated to 32-bits when Volume_dump and DD are run on versions of Microsoft Windows™ prior to Windows™ Vista and Windows™ Server 2003 with SP2. In addition the “--ata_hpa” option will fail when DD is run on susceptible versions of Microsoft Windows™.
This release of the FAU will not run on Microsoft Windows Vista x64 Gold due to a bug in the Microsoft operating system relating to manifest for the Microsoft runtime library. This problem has been fixed in SP1 for Windows Vista.

SelfImage is the little hard drive utility with big aspirations.

SelfImage is capable of making an image file of a hard disk or hard disk partition, and can restore an image back to any drive or partition that doesn't have open files. Useful for making backups. Unlike dd for Windows (or cygwin), SelfImage is capable of creating an image of a partition that is currently in use.

SelfImage can even create images of partitions that Windows doesn't recognize (partitions that Windows doesn't have mounted on a drive letter). This is perfect for the dual-boot system, you can create an image backup of a Linux partition directly from Windows.

Create 1:1 image files of any mounted (or unmounted on Windows 2000/XP) hard disk partition.

Can create an image of an entire hard disk, including the master boot record, partition table, and all partitions (Windows 2000/XP)

Restore previously created images to any partition, even mounted ones, as long as it doesn't have open files.

On-the-fly compression accelerated with parallel CPU support to take advantage of today's hyperthreaded, multi-core and SMP systems.

Skip reading a disk's "free space", treating it as if it were zero. This decreases the size of a compressed image and makes it process MUCH faster. ^NEWVersion 1.2.0 can now do this for Linux ext2/ext3 partitions as well.

7 Feb 2007 - SelfImage 1.1.2 is released. Mostly a bug-fix release, this version corrects problems with reading past the end of flash devices, and problems writing to certain partitions.

12 Feb 2007 - Whoops! The last release introduced a bug preventing decompression. Version 1.1.3 has been released that corrects this.

30 Mar 2007 - SelfImage 1.2.0 is released with the ability to skip unallocated space on Linux ext2/ext3 partitions. A long-standing bug that prevented SelfImage from running on Windows 2000 has also been fixed.

1 Apr 2007 - SelfImage 1.2.1 is released to fix the bug introduced in 1.2.0. Yes, I really did it again. This version also comes packaged as a BartPE plugin, so all is not bad news.

What is DiskImage

DiskImage is the ultimate tool to backup and restore partitions, entire harddisks, usb keys, floppy drives and (read-only) optical media.

Diskimage is not a norton-ghost clone. It wil not automatically backup partitions. It will not move partitions on itself. It can not boot (a minimal OS), it's just a windows-32 application.

Command line tool

devcp is a tool that allows to copy raw devices and files, like a file to usb key and vice versa. It does not come near the abilities of diskimage, it can only copy without any additional parameters. If you seek such functionality, i suggest to find a windows port of the unix tool `dd`, like the one provided by unixutils

June 13. 2006 - Diskimage 0.9D is released. This version reports accurate filesysize of devices on operating systems that support that (XP, 2003 server). It will gracefully downgrade to 'CHS' based calculation on windows 2000.
The GUI hardly changed, but internal there is another library used, which also easifies adding more features in the future.

November 23.2005 - Diskimage 0.9 prerelease C released. This release includes a license change! The freeware version of DiskImage is now full-featured with no limitations!

Supported platforms

Windows 2000, windows XP. Windows NT4 untested. Windows 9x/me is not supported. A linux version may or may not be available in the future. We will focus on the feature set first before porting.

* Licensing issues prevented us from including anti-virus and disassembling funtionality using common available libraries. A plugin mechanism may circumvent this. But, this has to be discussed with various authors. Using GPL solves this issue, disassembling and virus scanning is available in public and development version and is released to the public.

Current version is GPL. The current version is 0.9F, which provides already all functionality that will be available in version 1.0, but needs a little polishing.

History

DiskImage has it's roots in the cd2iso application, but is extended to a full-featured tool. Many hours of coding made this tool convenient, reliable and multi-purpose.

Reliability

Although we extensively tested the application, we cannot guarantuee it is free of bugs or protect you from making mistakes. You are solely responsible for making backups of your data. The software is capable of overwriting harddisk partitions (although you could overwrite part of your harddisk. With normal use you risk destroying data on floppy disks, usb keys, internal and external harddisks. By using the application you inherently agree you know what you are doing. We are not responsible for you loosing data!
